Heart Connections – April 2024

For the pets and people of our community, April was another joy-filled month as a total of 66 pets were adopted. One of our greatest successes from the month is the adoption of Wilhelmina (pictured), who waited 47 days to find her match. Wilhelmina came in as a stray cat with an injured leg that was clearly causing her a lot of discomfort. Our amazing medical team and veterinarian went straight to work in discussing a treatment plan. Thanks to Williamsburg Vet Clinic, she had a successful leg amputation of one of her back legs and now knows the love of a forever family!

GMHS is incredibly thankful to our friends and supporters who ensure we have the resources to give pets like Wilhelmina the time necessary to make a lasting heart connection. May Wilhelmina and her new family enjoy many happy years together!

“Cats in my community keep having kittens! What can I do?”

If the cat has an owner, you can tell them about our low-cost spay and neuter assistance options at Fixin’ to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic, located in the White Marsh Shopping Center. The clinic is open Monday-Wednesday of each week. They can click here to make an appointment or call 804-694-0349 with questions. If the cat does not have an owner but you are willing to help, Fixin’ to Save can assist with the surgery so that the cat can be released and live its life without continuing to give birth to unwanted litters.

When you support GMHS, you help us save even the tiniest of lives, like these 1 day old orphaned kittens. We are grateful for your friendship!

Shelter Pet Spotlight – Jack and Murphy

What is better than one cat? Try two! Bonded pair Jack and Murphy came in recently at no fault of their own. These brothers have been together since the very beginning, and are looking for a home together. They are the perfect pair! They are affectionate, friendly and would make great family cats. Both will greet you, rub on your legs, and purr so loud. As a fun fact, both cats are polydactyl! This means they have extra toes. Come meet them in Condo A at GMHS!

Heart Connections – March 2024

In March, 86 pets made heart connections with their forever families. Our thanks to adopters for welcoming these amazing pets into their hearts and homes! Above are just a few of the new matches made this month.

Chocolate and Chip mark the beginning of kitten season! During this busy time, GMHS provides food, shelter, and vet care to dozens of kittens and mamas each month!

Donate today to GMHS to support our mission to save and transform the tiniest of lives. Your donation will allow us to purchase powdered milk replacement needed for kittens found without mothers to be bottle fed, and Purina Kitten Chow to keep their bellies full as they grow and thrive. Your gift will ensure each kitten is vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped before making their heart connection.

Donations can be made via PayPal, phone (804-693-5520), and mail

Shelter Pet Spotlight – Molly

Molly recently was seen with one of our staff members receiving lots of love, and in return she gave plenty of kisses! We had to capture the cute moment, but can you imagine if this was you instead? Molly is a sweet senior at the age of seven years, but still has so much life in her. Molly is guaranteed to give you kisses, cuddles, play with you, and be the best companion. She loves playing with toy balls and plush toys, and will jump and run to catch it; and yes, she returns it. Molly currently is in one of our “homeroom” kennels that is set up like a bedroom. She loves her bed, but she is dreaming of one to call her own in your home!

Heart Connections – February 2024

In February, 74 pets made heart connections with their forever families. Our thanks to adopters for welcoming these amazing pets into their hearts and homes! Above are just a few of the new matches made this month.

Kitten Fosters Needed

Kitten season is almost here! Critical to GMHS’ ability to save these tiny lives is growing the ranks of our kitten foster volunteers. From bottle babies to those who are several weeks old, kittens reared in a home grow healthy and strong before adoption or transfer to one of our adoption-guaranteed partners.

All foster volunteers receive training and necessary supplies. If you would like to join our foster team and be a super hero for our community’s kittens, click here to fill out your foster application.

Gabriella Byser (left) dropped by with homemade toys for our homeless cats, and Nancy Deptola (right) brought pet food donations on behalf of the Exchange Club of Gloucester – Mathews. Thank you all for supporting our pets!

Zowey and Savannah donated pet food and supplies in honor of Savannah’s birthday. Huge thanks to you both! We are touched by your kindness and thankful for your friendship.

Shelter Pet Spotlight – Luna

Looking for a dog to be your number one? The apple of your eye? Pick Luna! Luna is a very sweet girl. She loves snuggling with you, too! She is 7 years old but don’t let her age fool you, she still has energy and loves walks. A few times she has laid in a staff member’s office on a blanket and was so calm and relaxed. Luna is a staff and volunteer favorite here at GMHS. She’s currently livin’ it up in Homeroom A which is set up like a bedroom and she keeps her room nice and tidy. She would be a great best friend for anyone!
