Heart Connections – March 2024

In March, 86 pets made heart connections with their forever families. Our thanks to adopters for welcoming these amazing pets into their hearts and homes! Above are just a few of the new matches made this month.

March 2024 Shelter Snapshot

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners.

At GMHS, our volunteers go the extra mile to ensure the health and happiness of each pet in our care. Volunteers can find themselves walking dogs, cuddling cats, folding laundry, fostering pets, handling animals at events, and so much more! We have volunteers involved in almost every aspect of the shelter and we are always looking for passionate people to join our volunteer team. Click here to learn more and get involved!

We’re growing our team! We are currently hiring a Veterinary Assistant to join our medical team. We seek a candidate who is self-motivated, possesses a superb attention to detail, and is excited to work in a dynamic team environment. Stop by to learn more and apply!

We love to host Pet Story Time every Wednesday at 1:00 PM at GMHS! We read a story together, do a small craft, then we invite you to read to our shelter pets. No registration is required and all ages are welcome.

Have you ever wanted to get a behind-the-scenes tour of GMHS? If so, mark your calendars for April 4, at 1:00 PM! Join GMHS Humane Educator Voula as she shares about our life-saving work. Come in for a shelter tour, you may even leave with a new best friend!

We were thrilled to spend time this month with our friends from Walter Reed Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Ware Academy, Bethel Elementary School, Hamilton Assisted Living, and Bay Aging Adult Day Break!

GMHS offers interactive, educational programs to students in classrooms (PreK-12th grade), school enrichment clubs, scout troops, youth groups, and other community organizations. Call 804-693-5520 to schedule a visit!

Chocolate and Chip mark the beginning of kitten season! During this busy time, GMHS provides food, shelter, and vet care to dozens of kittens and mamas each month!

Donate today to GMHS to support our mission to save and transform the tiniest of lives. Your donation will allow us to purchase powdered milk replacement needed for kittens found without mothers to be bottle fed, and Purina Kitten Chow to keep their bellies full as they grow and thrive. Your gift will ensure each kitten is vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped before making their heart connection.

Donations can be made via PayPal, phone (804-693-5520), and mail

(P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061).

GMHS is neither affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations nor receives funding from the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. GMHS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our tax ID# is 51-0206238. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Shelter Pet Spotlight – Molly

Molly recently was seen with one of our staff members receiving lots of love, and in return she gave plenty of kisses! We had to capture the cute moment, but can you imagine if this was you instead? Molly is a sweet senior at the age of seven years, but still has so much life in her. Molly is guaranteed to give you kisses, cuddles, play with you, and be the best companion. She loves playing with toy balls and plush toys, and will jump and run to catch it; and yes, she returns it. Molly currently is in one of our “homeroom” kennels that is set up like a bedroom. She loves her bed, but she is dreaming of one to call her own in your home!
